Easy School Lunch Ideas When You're Already Out of Ideas
We're only a few weeks into the school year, and somehow packing lunches can already feel repetitive. If you've reached the point where you're staring into the refrigerator wondering what else you can possibly put in a lunchbox, you're definitely not alone.
The good news is that school lunches don't need to be creative or complicated every day. Having a list of easy combinations you can rotate through makes packing lunches much less stressful.
1. DIY Lunchable
Skip the sandwich and pack:
- Crackers
- Sliced cheese
- Turkey or ham
- Fruit
- A small treat
Kids can build their own cracker sandwiches, and it takes only a few minutes to pack.
2. Turkey and Cheese Roll-Ups
Roll slices of turkey around cheese and pair them with crackers, cucumbers, fruit, and a favorite snack.
3. Mini Bagel Lunch
Pack a mini bagel with cream cheese or another favorite spread. Add fruit, yogurt, and pretzels for an easy lunch that feels different from another sandwich.
4. Breakfast for Lunch
Who says breakfast has to happen in the morning? Try mini pancakes or waffles with fruit, yogurt, and a little syrup for dipping.
5. Quesadilla
Make a simple cheese or chicken quesadilla and cut it into triangles. Add salsa for dipping along with fruit and another easy side.
6. Pasta Salad
Use leftover pasta to make a simple cold pasta salad. Add cheese cubes, veggies, pepperoni, or whatever your child likes.
7. Hummus Snack Box
Pack hummus with pita bread or crackers, cucumbers, carrots, cheese, and fruit. It's basically a snack plate disguised as lunch.
8. Peanut Butter and Banana Roll-Up
Spread peanut butter on a tortilla, add a banana, roll it up, and slice it into pieces. If your school is nut-free, substitute an approved alternative.
9. Pizza Lunch
Pack mini naan, pita, or another bread with pizza sauce, shredded cheese, and toppings so kids can make their own mini pizzas at lunch.
10. Leftovers
Don't overlook last night's dinner. If your child has access to an insulated food container, leftovers like pasta, mac and cheese, soup, chicken, or rice can make an incredibly easy school lunch.
The Easiest Lunch Formula
When you're completely out of ideas, stop trying to think of an entire meal. Just pick one item from each category:
- Main: Sandwich, wrap, crackers and cheese, pasta, quesadilla, or leftovers
- Fruit or veggie: Grapes, berries, apple slices, carrots, cucumber, or orange slices
- Crunchy side: Pretzels, crackers, popcorn, or chips
- Something fun: Cookie, fruit snack, mini muffin, or another favorite treat
That's it. Lunch is packed.
You don't have to create a Pinterest-worthy lunchbox every morning. Kids are usually perfectly happy eating their favorites on repeat, and there's nothing wrong with keeping things simple during a busy school week.
Create a handful of easy lunch combinations your kids actually eat and rotate through them. Sometimes taking one more decision off your plate is the best back-to-school hack of all.
